During the Ground Up Residency at GroundWork Gallery, I explored the theme of Silica. As part of the project, I researched historical forest glassmakers’ recipes for making glass from sand mixed with potash or soda ash. Ashes from burning beechwood, bracken or samphire, also known as glasswort, were mixed with sand to lower the melting point.
